Of course they are. The previous definitions were not credible and nonsensical. > I invite you to add to the literature if you think you have any novel insight, and get it published. That has been already done. You might want to start here: [0] - A Definition of AGI Let's read the agreed (Gary Marcus approved) definition together: "AGI is an AI that can match or exceed the cognitive versatility and proficiency of a well-educated adult." What other well-educated adult can claim that they gave a rigorous solution to an unsolved mathematical…

Paper and discussion history. But significant research has been published into its definition, by researchers from the main LLM providers, like https://arxiv.org/abs/2510.18212 Also, I would say SOTA LLM models can sustain a longer, more intelligent conversation than most people. Just in context length alone, they can keep track of more context than humans. But they're nowhere near as efficient the human brain, or the attention to quickly connect and find decades worth of memory like us.

Paper and discussion history. With apologies to René Descartes[a], intelligence and consciousness are different. Intelligence can be verified and quantified, for example, with tests of common sense and other knowledge.[b] Consciousness, on the other hand, is notoriously difficult if not impossible to verify, let alone quantify. I'd say AI is getting more intelligent, and more…

Paper and discussion history. This paper was published some days ago that aims to define AGI: https://www.arxiv.org/abs/2510.18212. But crucially, there is no agreed-upon definition of AGI. And I don't think we're close to anything that resembles human intelligence. I firmly believe that stochastic parrots will not get us to AGI and that we need a different methodology. I'm sure humanity will eventually create AGI, and perhaps even in my lifetime (in the next few decades). But I wouldn't put my money on that bet.

Paper and discussion history. Do others besides this author agree with that representation? The weak points are speed and long-term memory. Those are usually fixable in computing system. Weak long-term memory indicates that, somehow, a database needs to be bolted on. I've seen at least one system, for driving NPCs, where, after something interesting has happened, the system is asked to summarize what it learned from that session. That's stored somewhere outside the LLM and fed back in as a prompt when needed.
