Google rolled out program to allow political spam a month ago, but this article claims the Republicans aren't using it: https://www.theverge.com/2022/10/13/23403259/google-gmail-re...

Paper and discussion history. Gmail leaned towards the left (Democrats) whereas Outlook and Yahoo leaned towards the right (Republicans). Gmail marked 59.3% more emails from the right candidates as spam com- pared to the left candidates, whereas Outlook and Yahoo marked 20.4% and 14.2% more emails from left candidates as spam com- pared to the right candidates, respectively.” https://arxiv.org/pdf/2203.16743.pdf

Paper and discussion history. Grassley, although he doesn't seem to be articulating the issue very well. Remember what happened in 2020: near the presidential election, you couldn't even DM the URL of the NY Post story to others. [1] That's blatant censorship, no matter the merits of the news story. Given tech's extreme political bias [2], it is quite likely that something similar will happen again. Comparison to spam filtering seems to be the new pro-censorship talking point [3], so it's quite possible the thing itself will soon have some kind of political censorship built into it. It’s not easily explained away by other factors. Study showed a smaller bias towards the right for Yahoo/Outlook. I wouldn’t be too surprised if a number of Dems support this bill for the same reason. https://arxiv.org/pdf/2203.16743.pdf > We further observe that Gmail marks a significantly higher percentage (67.6%) of emails from the right as spam compared to the emails from left (just 8.2%).

Paper and discussion history.
