It would be awesome if someone involved with JPEG-XL could arrange for the same. Edit: I found https://arxiv.org/abs/1908.03565 but it hasn't been updated since 2019. I was mostly going by the committee draft on the arXiv (https://arxiv.org/abs/1908.03565 ), which still mentioned the quantization constraint (J.3) and a "mathematically lossless" mode (annex O) distinct from modular. "Four formats" was just imprecise wording on my part. The material already public about JPEG XL's design rationale, testing, and so on has been really fun to follow as an outsider. I selfishly hope there's more of it as the work on it and rollout continue. Even with the standard itself public, a lot can be mysterious to those not…

Paper and discussion history. Background: JPEG XL is a combination of Cloudinary's FUIF [1] (successor of FLIF [2]) and Google's Pik [3]. Committee Draft (Aug 2019): https://arxiv.org/abs/1908.03565 Technical Details: https://www.spiedigitallibrary.org/conference-proceedings-of... Features / Goals: - high quality compression (> 60% over JPEG-1) - royalty-free with open source implementations available from the start - versatile: supports alpha transparency, high bit depth (16-bit), lossless compression, animations - progressive decoding / "responsive…

Paper and discussion history. The draft is at https://arxiv.org/abs/1908.03565 and a little bit about what it has and why is at https://www.spiedigitallibrary.org/conference-proceedings-of... (but I haven't found nearly as much public detail on tools, reasoning behind choices, etc. as there is for e.g. AV1). The most interesting bit of it is that it contains a JPEG1 recompressor that saves about 20% space but allows exact reconstruction of the original file. It uses more modern…

Paper and discussion history.
