In what few empirical studies on what makes programmers effective, sleep, is the primary contributing factor to low error rates [0][1]. Stress and overwork are probably close seconds. And some of these studies are cross-sectional across knowledge workers; iow, not just programmers. If you want to make it to your 40s and still be an effective IC you need to learn how to regulate yourself and follow a disciplined approach to work. Cognitive performance from chronic sleep deprivation takes years to show up. I'd love for an empoloyer to care about it enough to 'put their money where their mouth' is when it comes to making sure I'm looking out for myself sleep wise, but I wholeheartedly accept this stance. ref: [0] Sleep deprivation: Impact on cognitive performance https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2656292/ [1] Need for Sleep: the Impact of a Night of SleepDeprivation on Novice Developers’Performance https://arxiv.org/pdf/1805.02544.pdf [2] Personal anecdata

Paper and discussion history. The most recent research available is the replication of the large scale GitHub study [1]. The relative effects of language choice on code quality is less than 1%. The main finding is that language choice hardly matters at all. On the other hand, we can easily measure the effects of factors like sleep [2], overwork [3], and happiness [4] on code quality. If static typing was an actual factor, we’d see exactly the same kinds of effects. There’s nothing wrong with enjoying static typing, but there’s…

Paper and discussion history.
