Seven Sketches in Compositionality: An Invitation to Applied Category Theory

Brendan Fong, David I Spivak

Abstract

This book is an invitation to discover advanced topics in category theory through concrete, real-world examples. It aims to give a tour: a gentle, quick introduction to guide later exploration. The tour takes place over seven sketches, each pairing an evocative application, such as databases, electric circuits, or dynamical systems, with the exploration of a categorical structure, such as adjoint functors, enriched categories, or toposes. No prior knowledge of category theory is assumed. A feedback form for typos, comments, questions, and suggestions is available here: https://docs.google.com/document/d/160G9OFcP5DWT8Stn7TxdVx83DJnnf7d5GML0_FOD5Wg/edit

    • This seems like a needlesly defensive answer. If there are no examples then just say so. It is mathematics after all, some of it is beautiful to explore just for its own sake, no examples or applications neccesary. But claiming a technique is a bridge between disparate areas of…

    • As I understand it, submissions are moderated (albeit lightly -- not to the degree of formal peer review). So, since it's on the arXiv, we can assume that the moderators felt it belongs there. I've seen a number of other book-length items on the arXiv before, including e.g.…

    • If anyone is interested in Applied Category Theory, definitely check out the Topos Institute in Berkeley [1]. They do weekly seminars that they post on youtube and a really intriguing blog. I must say that David Spivak is a treasure to hear speak. 7 Sketches in Compositionality…

    • I’m currently taking a category theory course based on Fong & Spivak’s textbook An Invitation to Applied Category Theory [1] and this reminds me of chapter 3 which introduces functors and natural transformations by way of using them to describe schemas, database instances and…

    • I would recommend "Seven Sketches in Compositionality", as it does not progressively get harder, but each chapter starts off very easily. So you can catch up, if you got lost. It is available here: https://arxiv.org/abs/1803.05316

    • If you’re curious about this stuff and don’t know where to begin, the first chapter of Fong & Spivak, “An Invitation to Applied Category Theory: Seven Sketches in Compositionality” [1] also introduces category-theoretic ideas using partial orders. Edit: After the Fong & Spivak…

    • I have a disclaimer. I'm not an expert in category theory at all. However, my primary background is in mathematics and I've "looked over the basics" as they say. If you'll allow me to dodge the question just a little bit, I'd recommend that you dive in and see what it feels like…

    • This has probably been posted before but since Category Theory has been popping up every once in a while I thought I'd share this. I'm just starting this and the instructors' [book](https://arxiv.org/abs/1803.05316) here, and the subject is very approachable even for biologists…

    • As a Lisper, I love Clojure and all Rich Hickey does. However, Haskell and categories seem to offer quite appealing approaches to compositionality: http://conal.net/talks/compiling-to-categories.pdf https://arxiv.org/abs/1803.05316

    • What kinds of graphs? There are a number of graphical representations that turn out to be incredibly useful in category theory, but they're far from equivalent. IIRC, https://arxiv.org/abs/1803.05316 introduces some of them.

  7. Why Operators Are Useful 1 comment
    • The mnemonic value of "operators" as reminders of properties such as associativity or commutativity interestingly extends to diagrammatic reasoning. A diagram is really just a generalized expression, and this becomes quite useful when one has to deal with more than one "type" or…
