This is a patent on a very particular form of translation model that handles rare words, i.e. this paper that all the authors are on: http://arxiv.org/abs/1410.8206

Paper and discussion history. I do not know whether this new generation of translation models is leveraged by the google translation app though. Also pairs of languages for which their are big amount of parallel training data will still be favored.

Paper and discussion history.
