EDIT: In reply to comments: 1. The speed of the neutrino had already been measure experimentally before. It was unlikely that a new experiment would produce different results. 2. Requests for help from the scientific community are not delivered via press releases. Specially in an area as relatively small as high energy physics where everyone knows everyone. 3. If you look at the slides used to announce the "result" http://indico.cern.ch/getFile.py/access?resId=0&material... nowhere does it mention that they are not sure of the…

Paper and discussion history. I doubt they didn't double-check or 100-check the results. After some point the data just had to be considered believable or worthy of publication. You really think it would be better if they didn't let the world know about it?

Paper and discussion history. First off, I encourage everyone to read the actual paper at http://arxiv.org/pdf/1110.2685v1 [PDF], I think many here are seriously overestimating the complexity of the author's claim. I've mostly said this already on this thread, but it's buried near the bottom of the page, so I'll summarize…

Paper and discussion history. The proton signal is timeshifted a small amount until the curves overlap maximally. Where the leading and trailing edge are is irrelevant here, as the complete shape of the pulses are compared. 1: http://static.arxiv.org/pdf/1109.4897.pdf

Paper and discussion history.
